Wahl trimmer guide / Updated October 2026 / Specs from Wahl's listings
The short answer
For wide forehead and beard line-ups, get the Wahl 5 Star Cordless Detailer Li, or the Gold Detailer Li for a coated blade. For designs and fine detail, choose the Hi-Viz, whose slim neck keeps the cutting edge in view. For tight spots around the ears and neck, choose the narrow-blade A-Lign. To build a kit from scratch, take the Cordless Barber Combo: a Magic Clip plus a Detailer Li.
Below: the 4 Wahl 5 Star trimmers and 1 clipper-and-trimmer kit we sell, sorted by job. Specs are Wahl's published US figures, checked October 2026; where Wahl's sources disagree, the source is named next to the figure.

The picks, trimmer by trimmer

Pick 01
Wide line-ups and beards
Wahl 5 Star Cordless Detailer Li
The Wahl 5 Star Cordless Detailer Li (08171) is the wide-blade outliner: its 2215 adjustable T-Wide blade cuts 40.6 mm per pass. Wahl pitches it for sharp line-ups, outlining, beard work and facial hair design.
Its rotary motor (a spinning motor that drives the blade) has no published US speed. It runs cordless or corded, with a charge stand in the box. If the battery is fully flat, Wahl's manual says to charge it switched off for 1 minute before corded use.
Specs
Watch out
Wahl's US spec table says 90 minutes to charge; its manual says 45 minutes to 1 hour for the first charge. The warranty does not cover blades, and Wahl lists no taper lever: cut length comes from the guides.
Also consider
The Gold Detailer Li for a coated blade, or the A-Lign for close work around the ears.

Pick 02
Wide line-ups, coated blade
Wahl 5 Star Cordless Gold Detailer Li
The Wahl 5 Star Cordless Gold Detailer Li (08171-700) is the Detailer Li with a high-carbon steel blade under titanium and DLC coatings. Wahl's US page promises longer-lasting sharpness; its gold T-Wide blade listing (02215-700) says it runs cooler, resists corrosion and stays up to 4x sharper.
Wahl calls its motor a "full-size clipper motor" (no US speed is published) and lists the Gold as made in the U.S.A.
Specs
Watch out
The coated blade is the main upgrade: width and guides match the regular Detailer Li, and Wahl's US spec table lists a longer charge, 100 minutes against 90. Wahl's Gold page gives run time as both 100+ minutes and up to 100 minutes; this guide uses the lower figure.

Pick 03
Designs and fine detail
Wahl 5 Star Hi-Viz Trimmer
The Wahl 5 Star Hi-Viz Trimmer (3023699) has a slim neck that keeps the cutting edge in view, and Wahl pitches it for "perfect lines and intricate designs."
Wahl says its DLC-coated wide T-blade stays cool and sharp 8x longer than stainless steel in lab testing. Adaptive Speed Control adjusts motor power to hair density and thickness, and a 3-LED fuel gauge shows 30%, 60% and full. It also runs corded (per Wahl's booklet), fits Wahl's Power Station and Single Power Station charging stands, and is hand tested and assembled in Sterling, Illinois.
Specs
Watch out
Wahl lists no guide combs for it: its UK box list has none, and the US page gives no box contents. Plan on working bare-blade. The US page also skips the warranty length, which Wahl says is printed on the package.

Pick 04
Tight spots, ears and neck
Wahl 5 Star A-Lign
The Wahl 5 Star A-Lign (08172) swaps width for reach: a narrow, zero-gap adjustable T-blade in chrome-plated high-carbon steel, for the hairline, beard, neck and ears.
It is the only trimmer here with a published US motor speed (7,000 RPM, quiet in Wahl's words). It runs longest, up to 3 hours cordless, works corded too and takes 3 hours to charge. Its 3 guides stop at 3/16 in, so it is a detail trimmer, not a bulk tool.
Specs
Watch out
No charge stand in the box, and of Wahl's stands it fits only the Single Power Station, not the Wahl Power Station. It also charges from its own power supply.

Pick 05
Building a kit
Wahl 5 Star Cordless Barber Combo
The Wahl 5 Star Cordless Barber Combo (3025397) pairs a 5 Star Cordless Magic Clip with a Cordless Detailer Li, both black with gold blades. Wahl pitches it for cutting, fading, detailing and finishing. Our listing calls it Black & Gold Cordless Magic Clip & Detailer.
The clipper has the Stagger-Tooth Crunch Blade and an adjustable taper lever (the side lever that opens and closes the blade). Wahl says both blades, titanium and DLC coated, stay cooler and remain sharp up to 4x longer, though its combo page does not say compared with what. A single power cord works with either tool, and the box adds a styling comb, pre-shave brush, Pro-Set tool, oil, cleaning brush and canvas bag.
Specs
Watch out
No charging stand in the box, though both tools work with the Wahl Power Station and Single Power Station. The clipper guides stop at 3/16 in, while Wahl's standalone Cordless Magic Clip box lists 8 guides up to 1 in.
Also consider
If you already own a fade clipper, buy the Cordless Detailer Li or Gold Detailer Li on its own.

Wahl trimmers compared side by side
Figures are from Wahl's US product pages. The Gold's spec table says 100+ min of run time and its page copy says up to 100, so the table uses up to 100. The combo page lists no charge time.

Detailer vs Gold Detailer vs Hi-Viz vs A-Lign: how to choose
Gold Detailer Li vs regular Detailer Li
Both have the same width, body, guides, stand, run time and warranty. The Gold adds the coated blade, a gold finish, Wahl's "full-size clipper motor" wording (both are rotary) and, per Wahl's US spec tables, a 100-minute charge against 90. For the coated blade, take the Gold. If you already own a regular Detailer Li, Wahl lists the gold T-Wide blade (02215-700) as compatible with it, so you can add the coating later.
Hi-Viz vs Detailer Li
The Hi-Viz has no guides listed by Wahl, but adds the slim neck, a DLC blade and more run time (135 vs 100 minutes). Wahl's US spec tables also list a shorter charge, 45 vs 90 minutes, though the Detailer manual says 45 minutes to 1 hour for the first charge. Wahl's own pro blog suggests owning both: the Detailer Li for the bulk of the trim, the Hi-Viz for finishing.
If you use guides on beards, get the Detailer Li. For mostly bare-blade lines and designs, get the Hi-Viz.
Where the A-Lign fits
The only narrow blade here. Make it your main trimmer if your line-ups are mostly tight hairlines and necks; otherwise run it beside a wide one.
When the combo makes more sense
When you need a fade clipper too. Skip it if you already own a clipper you like or want a charge stand in the box.
06
How to zero-gap and care for a Wahl T-blade
The blade-setting steps come from Wahl's UK Detailer manual, because the US manual has no blade-setting section. The oiling steps come from Wahl's US Detailer Li manual. Work with the trimmer off and unplugged, using the Pro-Set tool where your box includes one.
Barber tip
On the Hi-Viz, if the top LED flashes while the bottom 2 stay off as you trim, Wahl says the blade may need cleaning, oiling or replacing. Check the blade before you blame the battery.
07
Pairing a Wahl trimmer with a clipper, and other brands
A trimmer finishes the cut; it does not replace a clipper. If you need both, take the combo, or add a clipper such as the Wahl 5 Star Gold Cordless Magic Clip and see our best clippers for fades guide. For a skin-close finish, add a foil shaver like the Wahl Vanish.

FAQ
Which Wahl trimmer is best for line-ups?
The Wahl 5 Star Cordless Detailer Li, for wide forehead and beard line-ups: its T-Wide blade cuts 40.6 mm per pass. For tight hairlines, necks and ears, use the narrow-blade A-Lign; for parts and designs, the Hi-Viz.
Which Wahl trimmer is best for men?
The Cordless Detailer Li covers the most jobs for men's hair and beards: a 40.6 mm blade for line-ups plus 3 guides (1/16 to 3/16 in) for short beards. The Hi-Viz has no guides listed, so keep it for beard edges. For beards longer than 3/16 in, use a clipper with longer guides.
Which Wahl trimmers are the highest rated, and are they good quality?
No source checked for this guide compiles star ratings for Wahl's pro trimmers, so the guide ranks them by Wahl's published specs and the job instead. Wahl's US site tags the Cordless Barber Combo as a Best Seller.
On quality, these are Wahl's 5 Star professional tools, and the Detailer Li and Hi-Viz manuals mark them for commercial use. The Detailer Li, Gold, A-Lign and combo carry a 1-year warranty.
Which Wahl trimmer is the most powerful?
Wahl does not publish comparable US power figures for the trimmers in this guide. Of these, only the A-Lign has a published US motor speed: 7,000 RPM, rotary. The Hi-Viz adjusts its power to hair density, and Wahl calls the Gold's motor a "full-size clipper motor". Speeds on Wahl's UK pages are for UK models, which can differ.
Gold Detailer vs regular Detailer: what is the difference?
The blade. Both cut 40.6 mm (1.60 in) with the same body, guides, stand, run time and 1-year warranty. The Gold's high-carbon blade adds titanium and DLC coatings, and Wahl's US spec tables list a 100-minute charge against 90.
Can you zero-gap a Wahl Detailer?
Yes. Wahl's UK Detailer manual shows how to set the blades flush for zero overlap. Wahl's US page calls the Detailer Li's blade adjustable and puts a Pro-Set tool in the box, and Wahl says the Gold's blade can be zero-gapped.
Flush is optional: that manual's standard setting sits 0.25 mm back, and the moving blade must never sit past the fixed one.
How long does a Wahl trimmer battery last?
Up to 100 minutes to 3 hours per charge, depending on the model, by Wahl's US figures. The Detailer Li, Gold Detailer Li and each combo tool run up to 100 minutes, the Hi-Viz up to 135 minutes and the A-Lign up to 3 hours. Wahl lists all of them as cord/cordless (the Hi-Viz per its booklet; its US page says cordless only).
Per Wahl's manuals, a 1-minute charge gives about 4 minutes on the Detailer Li and 3 on the Hi-Viz. Both manuals also say to charge a fully flat battery switched off for 1 minute before corded use, and that the battery is not user-removable.
Do Wahl trimmers come with guards?
Wahl lists guards, which it calls guides, for 4 of the 5 tools covered here. The Detailer Li, Gold Detailer Li and A-Lign each come with 3, from 1/16 to 3/16 in, and the combo with 3 clipper and 3 trimmer guides. Wahl lists none for the Hi-Viz. The red blade guard in those boxes covers the blade; it is not a length comb.
